Agrotermos

Preferred term

soil mechanical resistance to penetration

Definition

A complete explanation of the intended meaning of a concept
  • Physical property of the soil that corresponds to the reaction effort to the pressure exerted in a drilling movement, that is, the resistance that the plant roots face to penetrate the soil as they grow. It can be measured in pressure units (pascal, Pa) with the use of a penetrometer, an equipment with a metal rod with a tip that simulates the pressure of root elongation. It is directly related to soil compaction, moisture, structure and porosity, and can be modified according to soil use over the exploration time. It impacts root growth of plants at depth, preferred direction, length, and diameter and, consequently, water infiltration in the soil and the capacity of plants to absorb nutrients and water.
