Definition
- Specialized livestock production system where livestock is fed with a specialized diet that is intended to stimulate weight gain. The feeding period typically lasts for 6–9 months, depending on the starting weight and targeted live weight (though in some countries, it lasts 3–4 months). Diets are generally composed of highly energy-rich and protein-rich feedstuffs, such as maize and cakes, respectively. While exact setups can vary among different operations, animals are typically kept in fully enclosed areas to facilitate the fattening process.
