Preferred term

biodiversity hotspots

In ecology, a biodiversity hotspot or hotspot of biodiversity is a biogeographical region that is both a significant reservoir of biodiversity with a high density of endemic species and threatened with destruction. In more restrictive and quantitative terms, a hotspot should have lost 70 percent or more of its primary vegetation and should host at least 0.5 percent of the world’s plant species as endemics.
