Preferred term
soil water infiltration
Definition
A complete explanation of the intended meaning of a concept- Process through which rainwater or another source of irrigation penetrates deep into the soil. It is a stage of the hydrological cycle in which the subsurface water and ground water stocks are supplied. The former is responsible for the water balance in the root zone of crops and the latter is responsible for feeding the watercourses during periods of drought. When the infiltration capacity of the soil is reached, water runoff occurs, causing flooding and water erosion. The infiltration rate depends on the type of soil, its physical properties, vegetation cover, humidity level, soil compaction, among other factors.
Note
Notes- animal trampling; soil mechanical resistance to penetration.
