Integrated Livestock-Forestry
Definition
A complete explanation of the intended meaning of a concept- Sustainable production strategy that integrates livestock and forestry activities in the same area, seeking synergistic effects between the agroecosystem components, encompassing environmental adequacy, valorization of labor force and economic viability, optimizing yield gains while preserving natural resources (Balbino et al., 2011a). Also called silvopastoral system, it is characterized by afforestation of pastures with forest species arranged in rows. Its main advantages are the promotion of animal welfare and consequent improvement in animal health, the increase in the animal stocking rate on pasture compared with traditional livestock production systems, the improvement of soil fertility, soil erosion control and the lowering on the frequency of pasture reforms. In addition, investments in artificial shading for animals are unnecessary. It is of great importance in efforts to reduce GHG emissions, coordinated by the ABC Plan (see entry).
