Standardized Precipitation Index
Definition
- The Standardized Precipitation Index, or SPI, is a drought index that captures how observed precipitation deviates from the climatological average over a given time period.

Scope note
Notes about the usage and scope of the concept.- The most commonly used indicator worldwide for detecting and characterizing meteorological droughts. The SPI is based on the probability of precipitation for any time scale. The probability of observed precipitation is then transformed into an index.
