Scope note
Notes about the usage and scope of the concept.- Digital elevation model (DEM) is an umbrella term for a continuous grid with a real value representing elevation in each cell. It refers to a surface in general (e.g. atmospheric layers, groundwater table, etc.) whereas digital terrain models (DTM) always refers to a land surface. DEMs are used often in geographic information systems (GIS), and are the most common basis for digitally produced relief maps.
