Definition
A complete explanation of the intended meaning of a concept- General term referring to the number of homologous chromosomes (ploidy) in a somatic cell within one organism. Polyploidy usually indicates the presence of more than two sets of homologous chromosomes within a somatic cell. Polyploidy can occur through whole-genome duplication or fusion of unreduced gametes within the same species (autopolyploidy) or through hybridization of different species (allopolyploidy).
