Notes about the usage and scope of the concept.- In the past, Leptocephalus was used for species of larval eels, called leptocephali, that were thought to be new fish species, or whose adult eel species were not known. However, leptocephalus describes a developmental stage common to many species in the order Anguilliformes (eels) and some other groups, such as bonefish and tarpon, and is not as a taxonomic classification.
