Le virus de la variole du singe appartient au genre Orthopoxvirus de la famille des Poxviridae.
- La viruela del mono es una enfermedad zoonótica viral causada por la infección con el virus de la viruela del mono. Esta enfermedad ocurre principalmente en áreas de selva tropical de África central y occidental y ocasionalmente se exporta a otras regiones. El virus de la viruela del mono pertenece al género Orthopoxvirus de la familia Poxviridae.
- Mpox (monkeypox) is a viral zoonotic disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus that occurs in animals primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa and is occasionally exported to other regions. The virus that causes the mpox disease belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae.

- Following a series of consultations with global experts, WHO began using a new preferred term “mpox” as a synonym for monkeypox. Both names were used simultaneously for one year until November 2023 while “monkeypox” is phased out. The term “monkeypox” will remain a searchable term in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) to match historic information.
