small-scale food producers

A food producer who both operates on an amount of land falling in the bottom 40 percent of the cumulative distribution of land size at the national level (in hectares) and obtains an annual economic revenue from agricultural activities falling in the bottom 40 percent of the cumulative distribution of economic revenues from agricultural activities per production unit at the national level. Moreover (if holding livestock), the producer has to operate a number of livestock falling in the first two quintiles (i.e. the bottom 40 percent) of the cumulative distribution of the number of livestock per production unit at the national level (measured in tropical livestock units).

The four most commonly used criteria for the definition of “small-scale food producers” in the literature are: land size (or number of livestock heads), labour input (especially of family members), market orientation, and economic size of the holding (gross monetary value of agricultural production). Notably, just as not all family farmers are small-scale producers, not all small-scale producers are family farmers.
