In 2023, the three United Nations mechanisms on Indigenous Peoples asked the United Nations system to avoid using the term “Indigenous Peoples” in conjunction with “local communities”, stating that “the term Indigenous Peoples has been used in conjunction with other ambiguous terms and groups such as ‘local communities.’ In fact, the characteristics, nature, and origins of the rights of Indigenous Peoples are very different from other groups. Therefore, Indigenous Peoples should not be grouped with an undefined set of communities that may have very different rights and interests.” Unlike Indigenous Peoples, the term “local communities” is not associated with a specific international rights framework, dedicated United Nations mechanism or formal consideration by the United Nations General Assembly.

Nota histórica

The concept "local community" <c_45cd8441> was deprecated on 26 September 2020 and is replaced by "local communities" <c_9000107>, which is the recommended concept to use.
