About
Agrotermos is the platform for organizing, qualifying, and making available terminological data and semantic applications from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). Agrotermos is a conceptual space representing knowledge in the agricultural domain and related areas in Brazilian Portuguese. It brings together the most important controlled vocabularies on agriculture in the Portuguese language—AGROVOC (FAO's multilingual controlled vocabulary) and Thesagro (developed by the National Agricultural Library of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply)—in addition to original and relevant agricultural concepts and terms specific to Embrapa.
The development and management of Agrotermos is an ongoing effort. Methodologies and technologies from Documentation, Information Technology, Computer Science, and Linguistics are applied to the technical and scientific knowledge produced by Embrapa. This aims to produce terminological and semantic resources that enrich this conceptual space with Brazilian agricultural knowledge, boosting visibility and highlighting Brazil's leading role in agricultural knowledge generation.
Agrotermos 2.0 was built based on global initiatives such as the W3C (https://www.w3.org/), FAIR Principles (http://go-fair-brasil.ibict.br/), and it is aligned with AGROVOC (https://agrovoc.fao.org/). Furthermore, Embrapa's GTermos is also part of the AGROVOC editorial community and is a partner of AgroPortal (https://agroportal.eu/).
The incorporation of new terms and concepts into Agrotermos typically involves using scientific landscapes and extracting terms from technical-scientific corpora, alongside conceptual and terminological validation by domain experts. Thus, new concepts and terms from specific subdomains within Brazilian agriculture are modularly added to Agrotermos.
The curation and management of Agrotermos by Embrapa's Standing Working Group on Controlled Vocabularies, Agroterminologies, and Agrosementics (GTermos) involves a network of collaborators, internal experts, and external partners, using documented and established methodologies and practices.
Suggestions and contributions can be sent to GTermos using a specific form.
